How fast and dynamic the Internet is! And how radically the world wide web is constantly changing the way people and enterprises communicate! You never really believed this until you found out that like “Google,” the words “Digg,” “Stumble,” “Flickr,” “Tumblr,” “Reddit,” and “del.icio.us” have taken on a different meaning. And all these happened while you were still learning how to use Blogger.

It will not help the Internet user too much to know what social media optimization is. But if you have a website that you are trying to promote, it is a must to know how you can leverage social media to drive traffic to your website.

So what is social media optimization all about? How is it different from search engine optimization, for example? Search engine optimization refers to the process of applying certain tips and tricks to increase the chances of search engines crawling on your website and indexing it. As a result, your website turns up on the top portion of the search results page when a relevant keyword is searched. In contrast, social media optimization refers to using several methods to liberalize access to information found on your website, so that Internet users who are looking for relevant information can be easily directed to your website.

There are lot of ways to do this. But what is important is that you know how to maximize the potentials of the available methods. Of course, to be able to do that, you need to be familiar with how the several social media tools operate. You should learn how to use them to your advantage by matching their functionalities with your own goals.

For example, Digg is a highly useful social media tool for driving traffic to your website. It is essentially a user-generated platform that allows site members to vote, bury or add comments on articles that have been uploaded by other members. The site is searchable, and users whose articles have landed on the front page of the search results have seen the traffic to their websites rise dramatically. If you are using Digg, remember that you can only upload any article once, so you need to be a little more creative when writing your headlines. By putting the Digg button on your website, readers who stumble upon it can easily upload the article to Digg.

Del.icio.us, on the other hand, is a social media optimization tool that allows site members to keep public bookmarks through tagging. You can tag your own content but you need to remember that the links are “nofollow.” You can still benefit from getting tagging through click-throughs and even traffic increase, as when readers stumble upon your bookmarks when they perform a search.

Finally, YouTube is another promising social media optimization tool that you probably haven’t thought about. YouTube videos appear on the search results of Google, as well as on the video search of Google. As a reward, Google links back to the source site its top five videos in terms of traffic. Although this may not raise your ranking on the Google search page, it could take you a notch or a page in other search engines.

YouTube, Digg and del.icio.us are only the tip of the iceberg. There are still Facebook, Twitter, Plurk and the rest of the social media optimization tools that you need to plumb for potential benefits to your websites. The possibilities are endless.

Making corrections is easier and faster in the Internet marketing world. Editing text or adding or deleting graphics in an ad, based on customer feedback, is easily done in Internet marketing. Target marketing also works better here. While marketing offline, target marketing is more centered on geographic locations whereas with Internet marketing, identifying and accessing target markets based on race, ethnicity, socio-economic conditions, age, hobby, profession, gender etc. is easier.

The simple rule of online business is to be visible. The websites of the businesses which don’t have the visitors would sink like Titanic. There are many online marketing tools which help these websites have a visibility, web directory is only the one of thousands, add url to as many other websites as possible is the way to move up in ranks.
